En una entrevista con Con Estilo TV, el diseñador Carlos Marrero nos compartió un poco de su historia, lo que inspira sus colecciones y le da unas palabras de fuerza a jóvenes que desean tomar el mundo de la moda como su carrera.
In an interview with Con Estilo TV, designer Carlos Marrero shared with us a little bit about his story, what inspires him and shared a few words for young adults that would like to make a living in the world of fashion.

1) ¿Cuál ha sido tu mayor inspiración?
What has been you biggest inspiration?
Te diría que las décadas que siempre me inspiran son los años 1940 y 1950. Me encanta cuando las mujeres llevaban esas faldas voluptuosas, “New Look” de Christian Dior, los guantes y bellos sombreros y zapatos. Las mujeres tomaban su tiempo para vestirse, no es que yo estoy criticando a las mujeres de esta generación en particular! (sonríe) vivimos en diferentes momentos. Pero si pudiera haber nacido en otra época habría sido la década de los 40 y 50. Como la era “Mad Men”. Eso es lo que mas me inspira.
I would tell you that the decades that have always inspired me are 1940’s and 1950’s. I liked it when women wore the voluptuous skirts, from Christian Dior’s “New Look”, the gloves, beautiful hats and shoes. Women took their time getting dressed; I’m not criticizing the women of this generation in particular! (Smiles) we just live in different times. But if I could’ve been born in another time, it would’ve been in the 40’s & 50’s, like the “Mad Men” era. That’s what inspires me the most.
2) ¿Qué inspiro unir bolsos con bufandas?
What inspired you to unite scarfs and purses?
Creo que añadir una bufanda a la cartera le da un look diferente, la hace ver mas CHIC. Yo le llamo un Purse-Lift. Eleva el look totalmente.
I think adding a scarf to a purse gives it a different look; it makes it look more chic. I call it a Purse-Lift it totally elevates the look.
3) ¿Durante los últimos 25 años de carrera, cuales han sido los diseños que mas han marcado su carrera?
During the last 25 years of your career, what have been the designs that have highlighted your career?
Creo que mis primeras ilustraciones en la revista Cosmopolitan. Después poco a poco fue Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly, todas las revistas que admiraba desde pequeño. El mes pasado tuve unos dibujos en dos páginas de la revista Latina, y todavía me da sentimiento ver mis ilustraciones en revistas nacionales. Otro gran momento fue cuando publiqué mi libro y recibí la primera copia en el 2004, Fue grandioso. Ahora mi gran proyecto es mi línea de bufandas y verlas en boutiques… como cambian los tiempos! Algo que marco mi carrera hace poco fue el ver mi bufanda en Caitlyn Jenner en la television nacional en su show “I’m Cait”.
I think it was my first pictures in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Afterward little by little it was Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly, all the magazines that I’ve admire since I was little. Last month I had some photos in Latina Magazine and I still get sentimental when I see photos in national magazines. Another great moment was when I published my book and when I got my copy back in 2004, I was great! Now my project is my scarf collection and seeing them in boutiques, how times change. Something that marked my career was happened not so long ago; I saw my scarf on Caitlyn Jenner on national TV in her show “I’m Cait”.
4) ¿A que edad supo que querías ser diseñador?
At what age did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Desde que era un niño de 5 años y mi abuela nos cuidaba después de la escuela, porque mis padres se divorciaron y mi mamá tenía que trabajar. Mi abuela solía cocer ropa de con patrones. Ella usaba patrones de McCcalls y Butterick, y esos patrones tenían unas ilustraciones de moda en la cubierta. Solía tratar de copiar los dibujos, y siempre estaba tratando de perfeccionarlos.
Since I was a five year-old boy and my grandma took care of us after school because my parents were divorced and my mom had to work. My grandma used to sew clothes with patters, she used patterns like McCalls and Butterrick, and those patterns had some illustrations on the cover. I used to copy the drawings and always tried to improve and perfect the designs.
5) ¿Porqué es esta colección diferente y mas dirigida a lo que los fashionistas están mirando?
Why is this collection mostly directed towards what fashionistas are looking for?
Mi colección es una compilación de bufandas en seda con ilustraciones diferentes para la fashionista en busca de artículos únicos de moda sin la etiqueta de precio de alta costura. Siempre he querido que la gente le pregunte a mis clientas “¿Dónde conseguiste esa bufanda tan bella?”
My collection is a compilation of silk scarfs with different designs and patters for the fashionistas in search for unique fashion pieces without the high-ticket price. I’ve always wanted for people to ask my clients, where did you get that beautiful scarf?
6) ¿Qué sugerencias le daría a jóvenes que quieren empezar su propia
línea de diseños couture?
What suggestions would you give young adults that want to start their own couture collection?
Yo diría que nunca, nunca, nunca pierdan de visión que inspiró escoger esta carrera. Creo que el reto con esta generación es que tienen una mentalidad de microondas; hay que trabajar fuerte y no todo se da rápido. A veces se necesita mucho trabajo para lograr cosas. Si entra la duda, mantén el ojo en el premio. Algunas puertas se cerraran, pero mejores puertas se abrirán. Tienes que creer y actuar como si fuera imposible el fracaso.
I would tell them to never ever, loose the vision that inspired them to pick this career. I believe that the challenge with this generation is that they have a microwave mentality, a lot of hard work has to be out in and not everything happens quickly. Sometimes hard work and effort is needed to achieve things, if doubt comes in, keep your eye on the Price. You have to believe and act like failure is impossible.
