What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD develops when a person experiences a shocking or dangerous event. Some veterans experience this after coming back from war. Although it is natural for everyone to feel afraid during a traumatic situation, not everyone recovers from feeling afraid.

Our bodies have a natural fight or flight response when we are in any dangerous or traumatic situation. Those who don’t recover from the experience may be diagnosed with PTSD. One of the symptoms is feeling stressed or scared when nothing is inhibiting that feeling. There are two types of PTSD, acute or chronic. Acute is short term, while chronic is ongoing. Symptoms usually start within the first three months of the traumatic event, but this is not always the case. Same with the experience, it is not always a dangerous event that causes PTSD. People can also suffer from PTSD after an unexpected death in the family. No matter what the event was, PTSD could be severe enough to interfere with work or relationships, so it is important to pay attention to not disregard the symptoms.

According to the National Institution of Mental Health, an adult must have all of the following symptoms for at least one month to be diagnosed with PTSD.

  • At least one re-experiencing symptom (flashbacks or reliving the trauma repetitively, this includes dreams or frightening thoughts)
  • At least one avoidance symptom (staying away from places, events or anything that reminds a person of the event)
  • At least two arousal and reactivity symptoms (being easily startled, tense, insomnia, or anger outbursts)
  • At least two cognition and mood symptoms (trouble remembering key details of the event, negative thoughts about the self or the world, guilt or blame, loss of interest in activities)

PTSD can develop at any age. Children may have different reactions and symptoms with PTSD, which you may find in the Institution of Mental Health’s website.

The main treatment for PTSD are medications, psychotherapy or combining both. Several research has been made on the mental and biological effects of PTSD. There is still more research to be made to look at ways to prevent and treat this disorder.
