Bilingual since Birth

Parents should take advantage of teaching their children a second language since they develop this skill much quicker than adults. Erika Levy, Ph.D., assistant professor of speech and language pathology at Columbia University Teachers college, explained to Parents.com that children learn to understand two languages at a faster rate because they absorb whatever they hear. There is so much diversity in the United States and knowing a second language benefits children in the future for more job opportunities.

Exposing children to different languages and cultures also teaches them about diversity. Bilinguals are said to be more creative thinkers and have sharper brain functions. The best time to teach start teaching is when children are two and three years old. This is the time that they increase vocabulary and recognize speech patterns.

Creating a casual environment is the first step in teaching a child another language. Children learn to listen to the accent that they hear, and even mimic the same sounds they hear.  That being said, it is best to teach one word at a time. You can start by pointing at objects and teaching them the word in one language, and then have your partner teach them the same object word in the other language.

Another way to get your child to start picking up words in two languages is by buying CD’s or toys that are bilingual. There are also several line of books such as the Sing & Learn Italian with Professor Toto, which are offered in various languages.

The point is to get your child get used to being around two different cultures and to listen to different languages. It will be rewarding when you see how much they learn in just a few months!
