What bothers pediatricians

Looking up symptoms on the internet isn’t always the best thing to do. You can easily be misdiagnosed and find yourself freaking out over what you just read. Parents also turn to the internet to look up their child’s symptoms but pediatricians are the only ones to really tell you what your child has.

Bill Bush, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital gave some insight into what pediatricians wish parents would stop doing. Looking up symptoms on the internet is only one the things on his list that he says you should stop doing.  Below is a list of the top 7 pet peeves of pediatricians.

  1. Going to the ER for everythingUnless there is a real emergency, you don’t need to rush your child to the hospital.  Not to mention, hospital bills are expensive. It is better to call your pediatrician to make an appointment of an urgent care facility first.
  1. Requesting Antibiotics
Although antibiotics help kids get better quickly, they aren’t always the answer. You don’t want your child to create a resistance with these because then in the event that they really do become ill, their body won’t respond. Your child doesn’t need an antibiotic for a cold.
  2. Refusing Vaccines
Some parents have become afraid of vaccinating their children because of how many are given around the same time period. But Bush explained to Parents.com that vaccines are necessary to protect children. By delaying this, your child is at risk for any infection or disease.
  3. Unlimited Smart Technology

  1. Catching a cold from being outside Many parents blame the weather for their child’s cold. But in reality, this has nothing to do with it. There is no reason for covering up your child to protect them from catching a cold. Cold’s come from the spread of germs.
  1. Skipping doctor appointments You shouldn’t just take your child to the doctor’s office when they are sick. An annual physical prevents children from getting ill. It also helps doctors see the development of your child. Visits also create confidence between your pediatrician  and your child.
  1. Using Q-tips
Using Q-tips can actually create more wax build up in your child’s ears. There are other ways to remove wax from your ears. Q-tips only push back the wax further into your ear.
